Where do I get my Visa?
Tourist visa for Myanmar can be obtained from any Myanmar Embassy or Consulate world-wide. You must have a passport of at least 6 months validity with available visa pages. You can ask for an application form from the Embassy. For those who live in a country where there is no Myanmar Embassy and Consulate General office or for those who are travelling and have no time to apply for a visa, a visa on arrival can be arranged. What currency do you use in Myanmar?
The local currency used is called Kyat (pronounced, chat)
Do we have to pay 200 US$ to exchange into FECs (Foreign Exchange Certificates) on arrival at the airport?
No, it is no longer required to change 200US$ into FECs or any local currency on arrival.
Can I use credit cards in Myanmar?
It is not possible to use all credit cards, ATM cards, traveller's checks or wire transfers in Myanmar . This is a result of US sanctions. Although some major hotels will accept VISA credit cards, it is easier to bring cash only and make sure you bring enough to cover all your expenses: accommodation, meals,travel and shopping. You can officially bring in 2000US$ per person preferably in new 100US$ notes issued in or after 1996 with no torn edges or corners and the serial number heading of each note must not start with “CB”. We suggest that you also carry some US notes in small denominations. All foreign currency in excess of 2000US$ in equivalence must be declared.
When is the best time to travel to Myanmar?
The ideal time to visit Myanmar is during the cool season. This season starts in November and ends in the end of February. The temperature starts to rise in February and can be unpleasantly hot during the months of March, April and May. The rainy season is from mid-May to October. However, rainfall in Bagan and Mandalay and Inle Lake is very low, even during the rainy season. It is, therefore, possible to travel to these areas during the wet season.
Is it possible to travel by land route in Myanmar?
Land travel is one of the best ways to travel in Myanmar . For someone who wants to get a true feel of the country, meet local people and learn how they live. It is also a great opportunity for taking pictures.
Is there an airport departure tax?
Yes, the departure tax is $10.00US for international flights. No tax is paid for domestic flights.
What is the electricity power voltage?
The voltage throughout the country is 220 Volts 50 HZ Ac.
What immunizations are suggested for travelling in Myanmar?
There are no special requirements for Myanmar but we advise you to be current on your hepatitis A & B, Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio vaccinations before travelling. Influenza and diarrhoea are the most common illnesses which you may encounter. Check with you doctor before leaving to see what medications you should include in your medical kit.
Do I need to bring a water filter for drinking water?
No, you can buy safe drinking water at a low cost everywhere in Myanmar . Drink only bottled water and do not eat food from sidewalk vendors.
What kind of food is available during my trip?
Most of the international hotels provide buffet breakfast and the small hotels serve continental breakfast such as: toast, jam, eggs, fruit, juice and coffee. During your trip you can enjoy typical Burmese, Sino-Burmese, Shan, French, Italian, Chinese and Indian dishes.
Can I use my mobile phone in Myanmar?
No, you will not be able to bring you mobile phone with you while you travel. You will have to leave it at the airport until your departure at the Yangon airport.
Can I use the Internet in Myanmar?
Yes, Internet access is available at some hotels and at cafes in Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay and Inle Lake . You do not have access to hotmail or yahoo sites.
Is there anything I should bring to prevent getting sick?
Bring your own required medicine that you use daily. Bring insect repellent to prevent mosquito and other insect bites. Bring warn clothing for cooler areas. From November to February the temperature may drop at night to near freezing in higher elevations in places such as Kalaw, Taunggyi, Lashio and northern areas. Check with you doctor to see if you should take daily vitamins.
How do I dress in Myanmar?
Shorts, short skirts and revealing clothing are not appropriate. Short-sleeve shirt or blouse, long pants or trousers, longyis (sarong-style garments) or skirts are more appropriate at all times except at the beach. Shoes are to be taken off when entering private homes, before entering the grounds of any Theravada Buddhist shrine, temple, zedi, paya or monastery. Slip-on-sandals are the most convenient footwear while travelling in Myanmar . Sunglasses and hats are necessary and a raincoat or umbrella for the rainy season.
